France General A Dodds, a Senegalese, was France’s best known soldier prior to World War1. In 1901 as the senior general he commanded the allied army for a brief time, white Americans, Germans, British, French and Japanese against the Boxers in China. The Germans unable to tolerate a black general in command hurriedly sent out a Field Marshall.
